What happens after Election Day

Election night numbers are only the start. Here is how votes become official results, when recounts happen, and when winners take office, step by step and state by state.

Open in the app →

1. The counting keeps going

Results reported on election night are unofficial. Election offices keep counting every valid ballot, including mail, military, overseas and provisional ballots. Totals can change for days. That is normal. News outlets may call a race, but only election officials make results official.

Sources

2. The canvass: checking the count

Local election officials review the count to confirm every valid ballot was counted correctly, and add up the final totals. Most states call this the canvass.

Sources

3. Certification: results become official

Officials sign off that the count is complete and accurate. Local races are certified locally. State races are certified by a state official or board. Each state sets its own deadline.

Sources

4. Recounts in close races

A recount counts the ballots again to make sure they were counted accurately. Some states recount very close races automatically, some let candidates or voters ask for one, and a few have no recount process. A recount can push back certification.

Sources

Voted a provisional ballot?

Federal law says your election office must give you a free way, like a phone number or website, to find out if your provisional ballot was counted, and if not, why.

Sources

5. Taking office

New members of Congress start their terms at noon on Jan 3, 2027, as the 20th Amendment sets. State officials start on dates each state sets. Pick your state below.
